![]() It just explains how I got to the other Teys thanks to Snehanshu (who combines the soul of a researcher with the qualities of a collector and has the tenacity of a terrier when it comes to murder mysteries) and friends in London and Pennsylvania who hunted them out in second-hand book shops and over the internet. I also carried it with me when I got married. I rediscovered A Shilling for Candles many years later, found it just as riveting, and promptly appropriated my father’s copy. ![]() Having read it, I put it back in the trunk and moved on to other books. I enjoyed it thoroughly, especially impressed by the matter-of-fact enterprise of the seventeen year old heroine. It was a vivid shade of green that just escaped being lurid. The cover of the book, which has been lost since, arrested my search. It was probably too hot to go outside to play or to cycle down to the library. ![]() I discovered it while rummaging in the steel trunks that housed my father’s collection of books in the large box-room of a rambling Army bungalow. Ailey's sisters are Lydia, the eldest, and Carol Rose, the middle sister. All that was here, and it was enjoyable reading. What drew me to this novel was the aspect of a setting in a small Colorado mountain town, a good dog story, and a mystery to be solve by a small law enforcement group. While Brody hikes down to bring back the forensics team and veterinarian Cole Walker gathers supplies to protect them from the storm, Mattie and Robo find themselves alone, guarding the gravesite overnight in the dead of the early winter. By the time they find her body, the storm has broken and the snow is coming down hard. ![]() But it's mid-October and a dark snow storm is brewing over the high country. Eventually he found an agent in New York, who spent several years sending his manuscripts around, and trying to make the rejection slips sound hopeful. Those years garnered him a nice collection of unpublished manuscripts, but not a lot of money. ![]() Should anyone ever want to write a novel concerning the car-rental industry or the travails of temporary typists, John can provide excellent background material. Many of the party died, and some of the survivors allegedly resorted to cannibalism to stay alive.Īlma Katsu’s re-imagining of this journey-while staying true to many of the real-life people, places, and events-also plays to the mystery surrounding the terrible fate of the Donner Party, injecting a speculative element in the form of supernatural horror. Instead of following the typical route, however, the Donner Party opted to travel the new Hastings Cutoff, encountering poor terrain and other difficulties that slowed them down considerably, until they became trapped in heavy snowfall somewhere in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. For context, in the May of 1846 a wagon train led by George Donner and James Reed set out from Independence, Missouri like so many other pioneer families hoping to settle a new life in California. The tragedy of the Donner Party is retold with a supernatural twist in The Hunger, a dark mix of historical fiction and horror. ![]() This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own.
